Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Health Science Technology Education

Biology         (1 credit)              Biology related Internet Sites

This course is usually taken in the freshman year.  It begins with the study of the unique properties of living organisms that set them apart from the non-living.  The presentation of molecular and cellular biology gives a background for the concepts of reproduction and genetics.  Other areas include ecology, classification, organ systems, dissecting and collecting techniques.

 Grade level: 10

Prerequisites: None
Textbook: Biology: The Living Science - Prentice Hall

Integrated Physics & Chemistry            (1 credit)      Related Internet Sites

This course is usually taken in the sophomore year.  Physical science focuses on understanding basic elementary and physics concepts, with special emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking skills.  Topics include measurement and motion, classification of matter, patterns in matter, changes in matter, light and sound, and energy.  This course cannot be taken after Physics or Chemistry.  TAKS tested.

Grade level: 9                Textbook: Integrated Physics and Chemistry - McGraw-Hill

Prerequisites: None

Physics         (1 Credit)       Œ            Related Internet Sites

The basic concepts of Physics are presented in this course.  The central theme, the interrelationship between matter and energy, is applicable to all sciences.  Mechanics, the physical system used to interpret most daily phenomena, is the first concept presented.  Then, each form of energy-heat, light, electric, nuclear and the basic structure of matter are intertwined.  As these interrelationships are developed, the conversion laws are demonstrated and emphasized.

Grade level: 11-12

Prerequisites: Biology and IPC
Textbook:  Conceptual Physics lab Pack - Prentice Hall

Chemistry     (1 credit)        Œ                 Related Internet Sites

This course is designed to acquaint students with the building blocks and concepts of Chemistry.  Some of the topics covered are classification of matter, Atomic Theory, The Periodic Table, chemical bonding, quantitative relationships, gases and qualitative analysis.

Grade level: 11-12

Prerequisites: Biology and IPC
Textbook: Glencoe Chemistry: Matter and Change - McGraw Hill

Principles of Technology I           (1 Credit)

An applied physics course designed to provide a study in force, work, rate, resistance,

energy, power, and force transformers as applied to mechanical, fluid, thermal, and

electrical energy that comprise simple and technological devices and equipment. The

course reinforces the mathematics applications a student needs to understand to apply the

principles being studied.  Course credit will count as elective only.

 Grade level:  10-12

Prerequisites:  One course in science, Algebra I, Teacher Permission

  Anatomy & Physiology     (1 Credit)       Œ

This course is designed for introduction of human anatomy and physiology.  The course involves a wide range of laboratory experiences and discussions for students concentrating in nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, dental hygiene, pharmacology, health and physical education, as well as biology and pre-med and pre-vet programs in college.  Course credit will count as an elective only.

 Grade level: 10-12       Prerequisites: Biology

Environmental Systems   (1 Credit)

In this course students study a variety of topics that include:  biotic and abiotic factors in habitats; ecosystems and biomes; interrelationships among resources and an environmental system; sources and flow of energy through an environmental system; relationship between carrying capacity and changes in populations and ecosystems; and changes in environments.  Course credit will count as an elective only.

            Grade level:  11-12
